Sun Nov 10 02:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Veteran Tamil Actor Delhi Ganesh Passes Away at 80
**Chennai, November 10, 2024:** Renowned Tamil actor Delhi Ganesh, known for his versatility in character, comedy, and villain roles, passed away in his sleep on Friday night at his Chennai residence. He was 80.
Ganesh, whose real name was Ganesan, was born in Vallanadu, Tirunelveli district, in August 1944. He began his career in the Indian Air Force, serving from 1964 to 1974. During this time, he also honed his acting skills by participating in plays with the “Dakshina Bharata Nataka Sabha” group.
He later moved to Chennai and made his stage debut in “Dowry Kalyanam,” directed by “Kaathaadi” Ramamurthy. In 1977, director K. Balachander launched him into the world of cinema with the film “Pattinapravesam.” Balachander also gave him the stage name “Delhi Ganesh,” due to his previous connection to the city through stage performances.
Ganesh gained widespread recognition with his role in the 1979 film “Pasi,” directed by Duraisamy, where he played a rickshaw puller. His performance was lauded, earning him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor, presented by then Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran.
He went on to create a memorable character as “Guru Murthy” in Balachander’s 1985 film “Sindhu Bhairavi.” While he also ventured into lead roles in the 1980s with films like “Engamma Maharani” and “Thaniyada Thaagam,” these didn’t achieve significant commercial success. He returned to his strength in character roles, becoming a popular choice for comedians, villains, and supporting characters.
Ganesh’s collaborations with actor Kamal Haasan were particularly noteworthy, solidifying his presence in Tamil cinema. He shared the screen with Haasan in films such as “Nayagan,” “Apoorva Sagodharargal,” “Michael Madana Kama Rajan,” “Thenali,” and “Avvai Shanmugi,” as well as the recent “Indian 2.” He also appeared in numerous films with superstar Rajinikanth, including “Poladhavan,” “Puthukavithai,” “Engeyo Kettu Kurul,” “Moondru Mugam,” “Sivppu Suriyan,” and “Sri Raghavendrar.”
A true stalwart of the industry, Delhi Ganesh worked with nearly all leading Tamil directors, from veterans like Balachander to contemporary filmmakers. He was also a talented dubbing artist, providing voiceovers for actors like Vishnuvardhan, Chiranjeevi, Krishnakumar, Nedumudi Venu, Prathap Pothan, and Ravindar.
Beyond films, Ganesh also starred in television serials. He even ventured into film production, launching the movie “Ennula Ayiram,” starring his son Mahadevan.
Delhi Ganesh leaves behind a legacy of over 400 films across Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Hindi languages, captivating audiences with his effortless and understated performances. His absence leaves a void in the Tamil film industry.
