**Durban, South Africa:** Sanju Samson smashed his second consecutive T20I century, leading India to a dominant 61-run victory over South Africa in the first T20I at Kingsmead on Wednesday. Samson’s blistering 107 off just 61 balls, the fastest T20I century by an Indian against South Africa, proved to be the difference, propelling India to a mammoth 202/8.
Samson’s innings was a spectacle of power hitting, with 17 fours and 10 sixes, including a barrage of boundaries against the spinners. He shared crucial partnerships with captain Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, who also contributed significantly to India’s middle-order momentum.
South Africa, in reply, never recovered from a poor start, losing wickets at regular intervals. While they were briefly in contention after a 42-run stand between Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, the Indian spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi turned the tide, picking up three wickets each.
Chakravarthy proved particularly effective, removing both Klaasen and Miller in his final over, effectively ending South Africa’s hopes.
The hosts were eventually bowled out for 141 in 17.3 overs, with only three batters managing to cross the 20-run mark.
Coetzee, making his comeback from injury, impressed with the ball, claiming the wicket of Abhishek Sharma in his opening over. However, he was later punished by Suryakumar Yadav, who smashed 10 runs off his first over.
Samson’s heroic knock and the impressive bowling performance from Chakravarthy and Bishnoi have put India in a commanding position for the series. The second T20I will be played on Friday, with India looking to further consolidate their lead.
