Fri Nov 08 14:30:14 UTC 2024: ## Notre Dame Bells Ring Out for First Time Since Devastating 2019 Fire

**Paris, France** – The bells of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris rang out in harmony on Friday for the first time since the devastating fire of 2019, marking a significant milestone in the cathedral’s five-year restoration.

The eight bells in the northern belfry chimed together, echoing across the city, a testament to the painstaking work of hundreds of experts and companies who have been tirelessly rebuilding the iconic landmark.

“This is a beautiful, important and symbolic step,” said Philippe Jost, head of the public body overseeing the restoration. “It’s not perfect yet, but we will make it perfect,” added Alexandre Gougeon, responsible for re-installing the bells.

The fire on April 19, 2019, shocked the world as flames engulfed the cathedral, causing its spire to collapse. President Emmanuel Macron pledged to rebuild Notre Dame within five years, a promise that has been fulfilled with the scheduled reopening on December 7th and 8th.

The restoration has been a monumental task, with the northern belfry requiring extensive reconstruction and the bells being carefully removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. The heaviest bell, Gabriel, weighs over four tonnes, while the lightest, Jean-Marie, weighs 800 kilograms.

A weekend of ceremonies will mark the reopening, celebrating the resilience of this historical treasure and the culmination of years of dedicated effort. The sound of the bells ringing out across Paris serves as a powerful reminder of the cathedral’s enduring spirit and its place at the heart of the city.
