Sat Nov 09 04:42:46 UTC 2024: ## Pakistan Shuts Down Amusement Parks and Museums in Punjab to Combat Severe Smog

**LAHORE, PAKISTAN** – In a bid to combat the hazardous smog blanketing the province, the Punjab government has ordered the closure of amusement parks and museums for ten days, from November 8 to 17. The decision, announced on Friday, affects several major cities including Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, and others.

This drastic measure comes as Pakistan faces an unprecedented air pollution crisis. Seven Pakistani cities currently top the list of the world’s most polluted cities, with Multan registering an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 2,135. Lahore, with an AQI of 676, remains under a “hazardous air quality” category, and has been grappling with dangerously high pollution levels for weeks.

The severe smog has led to a surge in hospital admissions for respiratory issues, particularly in Lahore, Multan, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Gujranwala. Doctors advise residents to wear masks when venturing outside.

In addition to the closure of recreational facilities, the Punjab government has also ordered the closure of all educational institutions, including private and government schools, up to the higher secondary level, until November 17. Tuition centers and academies have also been directed to remain closed.

The government is facing criticism for its delayed response to the ongoing smog crisis, which is primarily attributed to seasonal crop burning and industrial emissions. With the situation showing no signs of abating, the government has pledged to implement stricter measures to combat the severe air pollution plaguing the province.
