Sat Nov 09 10:21:54 UTC 2024: ## Flooding Crisis in South Sudan Exacerbates Malaria Outbreak, Overwhelming Health System
**JUBA, South Sudan** – A devastating flood crisis in South Sudan has displaced over 379,000 people and triggered a surge in malaria cases, overwhelming the country’s already strained health system, according to the United Nations. The floods, the worst in decades, have affected 1.4 million people across 43 counties and the disputed Abyei region.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports a dramatic increase in malaria cases in several states, including Jonglei, Unity, Upper Nile, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Central Equatoria and Western Equatoria. The outbreak is adding to the suffering of flood-affected communities, exacerbating an already dire situation.
The flooding is the latest blow to South Sudan, a country grappling with chronic instability, violence, and economic stagnation. Aid agencies warn that the floods are worsening an already critical humanitarian situation, marked by severe food insecurity, economic decline, and continued conflict.
Over seven million people are facing food insecurity in South Sudan, and 1.65 million children are malnourished, according to the UN World Food Programme. The ongoing conflict in neighboring Sudan has further strained resources, with hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing into South Sudan.
The country’s political landscape is also marked by uncertainty, with a delay in elections until 2026. Meanwhile, the vital oil revenue, a major source of income for South Sudan, was decimated in February when an export pipeline was damaged in Sudan.
The UN is urging the international community to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to support flood-affected communities in South Sudan and address the growing health crisis.
