**COIMBATORE, November 9, 2024:** Coimbatore City Police is making strides in gender equality with the appointment of women in traditionally male-dominated roles, shattering glass ceilings and inspiring other women in the force.
Two women constables, **J Jebasheela** and **J Indumathi**, have become the first women in Tamil Nadu to join the Armory Workshop, where they repair and maintain police arms and ammunition. Despite initial challenges with the weight of the weapons, they embraced the opportunity, demonstrating their determination and breaking stereotypes.
Another groundbreaking move saw **P Bhavani** and **S Kavipriya** become the first female sniffer dog handlers in Tamil Nadu. These constables now work alongside their assigned dogs, Iyan and Aadhan, respectively, aiding in crime investigations.
Furthermore, six women constables have undergone training to become heavy vehicle drivers, marking another first for the state. This initiative, spearheaded by City Police Commissioner **V Balakrishnan**, encourages women to take on roles traditionally associated with men.
This bold initiative, part of the “equality project” led by the Commissioner, aims to break down gender barriers within the police department. “We encourage women to take up duties traditionally associated with men,” says Balakrishnan. He emphasizes that women’s contributions are valuable across all departments, highlighting the successful integration of women in the striking force team and the heavy vehicle driving unit.
These advancements reflect a positive shift in the Tamil Nadu police force, showcasing the commitment to gender equality and empowering women to excel in diverse roles.
