**New Delhi, November 8, 2024:** An exhibition commemorating the 350th anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji’s coronation has opened at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi. “Shivkaleen Shastraratre” showcases weapons used by the Maratha warrior and his contemporaries, offering a glimpse into 17th-century military tactics.
The exhibition, curated by Rakesh Rao of CORE Heritage, presents over 800 artifacts, including muzzles, handguns, swords, and specialized weaponry unique to the Marathas. Visitors can explore the evolution of warfare before the advent of modern tools and learn about the craftsmanship and usage of each weapon.
Among the highlights is Shivaji’s “wagh nakh,” the weapon he used to kill Afzal Khan, as well as the “Bichuwa” dagger, battleaxe, spear, slingshot, and “Vita” – a special spear that could be thrown and retrieved using a rope attached to the soldier’s wrist.
The exhibition also features a “Khanda” sword, renowned for its ability to break objects in two with a single blow, and a “Ghughi” armor, crafted from sheep and goat wool, offering lightweight protection.
Special attention is given to weapons used by children and women, signifying the importance of self-defense and military training at a young age.
The exhibition includes a replica of Chhatrapati Shivaji’s coronation sword, gifted to his general Hambirrao Mohite, and other objects touched by the king.
Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat visited the exhibition, praising the military legacy of the Maratha Empire. He encouraged people to visit and witness the historical artifacts firsthand.
“Shivkaleen Shastraratre” continues until November 10, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the military might and cultural heritage of the Maratha Empire.
