Ukrainian boxing champion Vyacheslav Uzelkov has passed away at the age of 46, the Ukrainian Boxing Federation has confirmed. Uzelkov, who held the WBA Inter-Continental, IBO International, and WBO Inter-Continental titles in the light heavyweight division, had been battling health complications following a recent heart surgery.
In March, Uzelkov was diagnosed with a blood clot in his heart and aorta, as well as gangrene in his leg. He underwent a complex heart operation in April and was undergoing rehabilitation.
The Ukrainian Boxing Federation described Uzelkov as a “talented athlete and champion,” as well as a “man of great heart.” They highlighted his “thirst for victory, strength of spirit, and incredible charisma.”
Uzelkov’s death is a significant loss for the Ukrainian boxing community. He was a source of inspiration for many young boxers and remained dedicated to Ukrainian sports throughout his career.
