Fri Nov 08 00:38:06 UTC 2024: ## Putin Congratulates Trump, Praises His “Courage”
**Sochi, Russia:** Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Donald Trump on his re-election victory, calling him a “courageous man” and commending his reaction to a recent assassination attempt.
Speaking at an event in Sochi, Putin said that Trump was subjected to relentless attacks during his first term in office. He also expressed interest in Trump’s claim that he could help end the war in Ukraine, though Trump has not elaborated on how he would achieve this.
Putin was particularly impressed by Trump’s response to the assassination attempt in July, in which Trump reportedly punched his fist in the air and shouted “fight, fight, fight” before being escorted by Secret Service agents. Putin described this behavior as “very correct, courageous, like a man.”
Asked about his willingness to engage in discussions with Trump, Putin stated, “We’re ready, we’re ready.” Trump himself had already indicated his openness to dialogue with Putin, telling NBC News that he believed they would speak.
The Kremlin has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential election to benefit Trump’s campaign against Hillary Clinton, allegations Moscow denies. While Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference found no evidence of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia, the issue remains a contentious point.
Trump’s return to the White House has sparked concerns in Ukraine and Europe regarding his potential to limit or halt American military aid to Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his desire for a “productive and positive” relationship with the US, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer assured Zelensky of continued British support for Ukraine.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a close ally of Trump, predicted difficult trade negotiations between the US and Europe, as Trump previously threatened to impose tariffs on all imports from the EU.
Amidst the reactions, some observers, including former Trump adviser John Bolton, believe Putin “knows how to play” Trump.
The implications of Trump’s second term for global relations remain to be seen, but Putin’s congratulatory message and his praise for Trump’s “courage” suggest a potential for closer ties between the two leaders.
