Fri Nov 08 09:45:19 UTC 2024: ## Afro-Asia Cup Revival Could See Indian and Pakistani Cricketers Team Up
**The prospect of a historic reunion between Indian and Pakistani cricketers is gaining momentum with the potential revival of the Afro-Asia Cup.**
The tournament, last held in 2007, was initially proposed by Indian Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah, African Cricket Association (ACA) Chair Sumod Damodar, and ACC head of development Mahinda Vallipuram. While initial plans for a mid-2023 T20 tournament fell through due to internal challenges within the ACA, renewed enthusiasm for the Cup has emerged.
Tavengwa Mukuhlani, the ACA’s interim chair, confirmed that discussions are underway with the ACC and African representatives, who are all keen on the revival. Mukuhlani stressed that the tournament provides much-needed financial support to the ACA.
Damodar, who was involved in the initial proposal, expressed his disappointment that the Cup didn’t materialize earlier, citing a lack of understanding and support from the ACA. He believes that the tournament could help bridge the political divide between India and Pakistan, promoting unity through shared sporting experiences.
The Afro-Asia Cup would feature a combined team of African players from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya, alongside a team made up of cricketers from Asia. The tournament would provide a unique opportunity for players like Babar Azam (Pakistan) and Rohit Sharma (India) to play alongside each other, a feat rarely seen due to political tensions between the two nations.
The last bilateral series between India and Pakistan took place in 2012-13, with the countries only facing off in major tournaments like the World Cup and Asia Cup. Matches between the two countries are major events attracting a global audience of hundreds of millions.
The revival of the Afro-Asia Cup could potentially pave the way for improved relations between the countries, with Damodar highlighting that cricket can be a force for unity and understanding. With all parties involved expressing interest in the tournament’s return, the future of the Afro-Asia Cup appears promising, potentially ushering in a new era of cooperation and sportsmanship between India and Pakistan.
