Thu Nov 07 23:07:00 UTC 2024: ## OLA Ambush in Ethiopia Leaves 48 Dead, Rights Group Investigates
**Addis Ababa, Ethiopia -** Ethiopia’s Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is investigating the deaths of 48 people in an ambush by the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in the Oromia region. The attack, which occurred last week in the North Shewa district west of the capital, also resulted in the kidnapping of an unspecified number of people.
The OLA, designated a terrorist organization by the Ethiopian government, has been waging an insurgency in Oromia since 2018. Despite failed peace talks, the region remains volatile, plagued by conflicts fueled by political divides, land disputes, and ethnic tensions.
The EHRC, a state-affiliated but independent body, blames the OLA for the massacre, while the rebels deny involvement. Both sides have been accused of violence and atrocities.
The OLA, whose strength has grown in recent years, remains a significant threat in the region. While observers believe the group lacks the capacity to overthrow the government, its continued presence adds to the already unstable situation in Ethiopia.
Despite the end of the Tigray war in November 2022, numerous conflicts continue to plague the country, including in the Amhara region. The Oromia region, the most populous in Ethiopia, remains a focal point for these struggles.
