Fri Nov 08 03:08:48 UTC 2024: ## Iyer Blasts Double Century, Resurging in Ranji Trophy
Mumbai’s Shreyas Iyer showcased his batting prowess on Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy clash against Odisha, smashing a magnificent double century to propel his team towards a commanding total. The right-handed batter, resuming from his overnight score of 152*, reached the milestone in just 201 balls and surpassed his previous highest first-class score of 202.
His innings, studded with 24 fours and nine sixes, came off a mere 228 balls, demonstrating his aggressive style. Iyer formed a mammoth 354-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Siddesh Lad, who also notched up his ninth first-class hundred. Together, they propelled Mumbai past the 500-run mark, showcasing their batting dominance against a struggling Odisha bowling attack.
This was Iyer’s second consecutive century in the tournament, following his impressive 142 against Maharashtra. The knock also marked his first first-class century in nearly three years, since his Test debut against New Zealand in 2021.
The double ton comes as a welcome resurgence for Iyer, who endured a relatively quiet start to the domestic season. He had a forgettable Duleep Trophy, scoring just 154 runs in six innings, and struggled in the Irani Cup as well.
However, his recent form in the Ranji Trophy will undoubtedly boost Iyer’s confidence. Having been dropped from the Indian Test squad and losing his BCCI Central Contract earlier this year, these centuries could be a significant step towards regaining his place in the national team.
