**Bengaluru, November 8, 2024:** A recently launched egg distribution scheme aimed at combating malnutrition in government and aided schools across the state has been plagued by significant implementation issues, according to an on-ground inspection.
Despite the scheme’s aim of providing eggs six days a week, a review of 357 randomly selected schools revealed that 66 schools (approximately 20%) failed to distribute eggs, even when requested by students. Instead, these schools provided students with chikkis or bananas.
The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has taken action, issuing notices to the non-compliant schools and holding 98 officials accountable, including 50 Block Education Officers (BEOs) and 48 Assistant Directors of the PM-Poshan Scheme.
The scheme, launched on September 25 in collaboration with the Azim Premji Foundation (APF), aims to address malnutrition, anaemia, and nutrient deficiencies. While eggs are the primary food source, bananas and chikkis are offered as alternatives for students who do not consume eggs.
The inspection team, comprising APF representatives and DSEL officials, found that in the non-compliant schools, over 30% of students demanded eggs but were not served. This number even exceeded 65% in some schools.
The report also highlighted that even when eggs were unavailable, bananas, the next preferred option, were not distributed in many instances. Instead, students were given chikkis, which often did not meet the prescribed weight standards of 40 grams.
Commissioner of Public Instruction Dr. K. V. Trilokchandra has expressed serious concern over the lapses and vowed to take strict action against the responsible officials. “Eggs should be provided to children on a priority basis,” he stated. “Legal action will be taken against guilty teachers and officials after they respond to the notices issued.”
The incident underscores the need for greater oversight and accountability to ensure the successful implementation of the scheme and its intended benefits for students.
