**Vientiane, Laos** – The 9th Asean Traditional Textiles Conference, held recently in Vientiane, Laos, highlighted the country’s rich weaving heritage and its burgeoning modernization efforts.

Despite its past challenges, Laos, a landlocked nation with abundant natural resources, is actively pursuing its modernization path with support from its neighbors, particularly China, Vietnam, and Thailand. The conference, hosted in the charming capital city of Vientiane, showcased Laos’s unique blend of traditional charm and modern aspirations.

The conference focused on “Asean Unity Through Weaving,” exploring topics like the historical significance of the Manton de Manila, sustainability in textile businesses, and the preservation of indigenous weaving traditions in Southeast Asia. The Philippines actively participated, with Dr. Analyn Amores Salvador of UP Baguio presenting her research on the recovery of Filipino textile collections from foreign museums. A group of Filipino teachers based in Laos also impressed the audience with their choral renditions of traditional Filipino songs.

Laos, a country with a rich weaving tradition centered around silk, offered delegates a glimpse into its vibrant textile industry. From mulberry farms where silkworms are raised to the intricate hand-spinning techniques using natural dyes, the conference provided a platform for cultural exchange and collaboration.

The conference, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, served as a testament to Laos’s commitment to preserving its traditional arts and crafts while embracing progress. The event was considered a success, leaving delegates eager for the next conference, scheduled to be held in the Philippines in 2028.
