**Chennai, November 8, 2024:** A Special Court in Chennai has convicted and sentenced a former Junior Engineer of the Greater Chennai Corporation to five years of imprisonment for demanding a bribe of ₹10,000.

A.R. Viswanathan, who was previously an Assistant Engineer in Division-182, was found guilty of demanding the bribe from a homeowner, R. Murthy, in 2012.

According to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), Murthy had constructed a building on a plot allotted by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. Viswanathan had demanded the bribe, citing “unauthorised construction,” and threatened action against Murthy.

When Murthy refused to pay, he lodged a complaint with the DVAC, leading to Viswanathan’s arrest while accepting the bribe on January 24, 2012.

After a lengthy trial, the Special Judge for DVAC cases convicted Viswanathan and sentenced him to five years in prison and a fine of ₹1 lakh.

Viswanathan, who was suspended from his position following the allegations, was taken to the Central Prison in Puzhal.
