Fri Nov 08 07:08:07 UTC 2024: ## Canada Blocks Australian News Outlet for Interviewing Indian Foreign Minister, Raising Concerns Over Press Freedom

**Ottawa, Canada** – An Australian news outlet, The Australia Today, has been blocked by the Canadian government for airing an interview with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and a press conference featuring Australian Senator Penny Wong. The move has sparked concerns about press freedom and further strained relations between India and Canada.

The ban, which came into effect shortly after the outlet published the interview and press conference, blocked access to The Australia Today’s social media pages for viewers in Canada. Managing Editor Jitarth Jai Bharadwaj expressed disappointment with the restrictions but stated the outlet remains committed to its mission of bringing important stories to the public.

The move has been met with strong criticism from India, with the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal labeling it hypocritical and highlighting Canada’s own record on freedom of speech. He pointed out that during his visit, Jaishankar had criticized Canada for making allegations against India without evidence, for engaging in surveillance of Indian diplomats, and for providing a platform to anti-India elements.

The ban comes amid escalating tensions between India and Canada, stemming from Canada’s accusations that Indian agents were involved in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has vehemently denied these allegations, calling them baseless and withdrawing some top diplomats from Canada in protest.

The recent incident, in addition to previous diplomatic spats, has further damaged relations between the two countries, with the ban on The Australia Today raising further concerns about press freedom and the potential for political interference in media coverage.
