Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor has revealed that he was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition, at the age of 30. The actor, known for his fitness, explained how the disease impacted his physical health and body image, especially during his peak film career in 2014-15.
“You will have moments of self-doubt in any profession. You fight through it. You look for validation,” Kapoor said, sharing how he battled both depression and the autoimmune condition. He explained that Hashimoto’s, which involves the immune system attacking the thyroid gland, caused him to gain weight despite his efforts. “It’s almost like I can take a flight and gain weight because the body goes into stress,” he said.
Kapoor’s family history added to his challenges. His late mother, Mona Kapoor, and sister, Anshula Kapoor, also suffer from the condition.
Doctors consulted by the publication explained that Hashimoto’s is a common condition, with symptoms like tiredness, weight gain, and skin problems. It can be managed through hormone replacement therapy and lifestyle changes like dietary modifications and stress management.
The actor’s revelation sheds light on the often hidden struggles faced by those living with autoimmune conditions. It also emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help and adopting a holistic approach to managing these conditions.
