**Sonipat, Haryana:** A law student at the OP Jindal Global University is challenging the university’s decision to fail him for using AI to generate his assignment. Kaustubh Shakkarwar, a practicing lawyer pursuing his Masters in Law (LLM) in Intellectual Property and Technology Laws, was accused of using AI for 88% of his assignment answers. The university’s Unfair Means committee found him guilty and failed him.
Shakkarwar has filed a case in the Punjab-Haryana High Court, arguing that using AI doesn’t constitute plagiarism as no such guideline was explicitly outlined by the university. This case highlights the growing challenge faced by educational institutions in the era of AI proliferation.
This incident follows the first report in a three-part series on AI and education by NDTV AI, which explores the implications of AI on education and its potential to disrupt traditional learning methods.
The outcome of Shakkarwar’s case will have significant implications for universities and students across India, as it sets a precedent for how AI use in academic assignments is viewed and regulated.
