**New Delhi, India:** The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the introduction of Ayurveda Biology as a new subject for the National Eligibility Test (NET), starting with the December 2024 cycle. The decision, approved in the UGC’s 581st meeting held on June 25th, 2024, follows recommendations from an expert committee.
This move aims to integrate traditional Indian knowledge with modern scientific understanding. UGC Chairman Professor Jagadesh Kumar highlighted the significance of this new subject, stating, “You are trying to understand our ancient medical system from the perspective of modern molecular biology and see what new solutions can be designed to make medicine and medical systems more approachable to people.”
The five-year integrated BSc-MSc program in Ayurveda Biology will equip graduates with the necessary knowledge to pursue PhDs and teaching positions in Ayurveda and Biology at universities across India.
The syllabus for Ayurveda Biology, consisting of 10 units covering topics from the history of Ayurveda to modern molecular biology and nanotechnology, is now available on the UGC-NET website.
The UGC-NET, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in computer-based test mode, assesses candidates’ eligibility for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship positions in Indian universities and colleges.
Interested candidates can find detailed information on the NTA website. The application window for the December 2024 cycle is yet to open.
