**New York** – Despite a star-studded lineup of endorsements from Taylor Swift and Beyonce to George Clooney and Harrison Ford, Kamala Harris suffered a crushing defeat in the US election, highlighting the limited impact of celebrity endorsements on voter choices.
While the Democrats relied heavily on Hollywood and music industry connections, including last-minute rally appearances from Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez, the Republicans, who received minimal support from the entertainment industry, found success with a targeted approach of hypermasculine influencers.
“People probably realize that Beyonce and George Clooney don’t have to worry about the cost of gas or the cost of eggs—so maybe they’re sort of irrelevant,” said Laurence Maslon, an arts professor at New York University.
This election saw Donald Trump garnering support from prominent figures in the world of sports, including UFC boss Dana White and golfer Bryson DeChambeau. He also benefited from the last-minute endorsement of Joe Rogan, the influential podcast host.
“This sort of ‘be a real man,’ the Trump ‘macho’ sort of thing… it’s the kind of thing that Joe Rogan plays all the time,” said Mark Harvey, author of Celebrity Influence: Politics, Persuasion, and Issue-Based Advocacy.
Despite the lack of overall impact, some experts believe celebrities can still be effective in promoting nonpartisan civic engagement. Ashley Spillane, author of Celebrities Strengthening Our Culture of Democracy, credits Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Harris with driving 400,000 people to a voter registration site.
However, the Democrats are facing a period of introspection, analyzing their strategies and the effectiveness of celebrity endorsements in influencing voters. Meanwhile, Hollywood celebrities reacted with frustration and dismay to Trump’s victory, expressing fears of a more restrictive future.
