**TIRUNELVELI, November 7, 2024:** Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Tirunelveli hosted a captivating photo exhibition titled “Indian Epigraphs” from November 5-7, showcasing the rich history of ancient inscriptions from various regions and periods. The event, organized jointly by the Epigraphical Division of the Archaeological Survey of India, Chennai, and the university’s Department of Archaeology, drew over 1,500 school students from Tirunelveli and surrounding districts.

The exhibition featured model photographs of inscriptions dating back centuries, offering a glimpse into the past. Highlights included a Tamil vatteluttu script inscription from the 8th century A.D. documenting the election system during the reign of Pandya King Maranjadayan. Another notable piece was the Thirumukkudal inscription from Kanchipuram, dating back to the 11th century A.D., providing detailed insights into ancient hospitals, doctors, and herbal medicine practices during the Chola king Vira Rajendra’s reign.

The exhibition also displayed a Tamil-Grantha script inscription from Palayamkottai (1535 A.D.) commemorating a land donation to a physician, and a Tamil-Brahmi inscription from Marukalthalai in Tirunelveli district, dating back to the 2nd century BC.

The exhibition served as a fitting tribute to the first anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Professor S. Sudhakar, Head of the Department, stated. The event provided students with a unique opportunity to engage with ancient history and appreciate the invaluable knowledge preserved through these inscriptions.
