Thu Nov 07 04:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Philadelphia Police on High Alert After Social Media Posts Suggest Potential Looting and Protests

**PHILADELPHIA** – Philadelphia police were on heightened alert Wednesday evening following social media posts suggesting potential looting and protests in the wake of the 2024 election.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel emphasized the importance of protecting all Philadelphia communities, not just the city center. “We’re being very, very cautious,” he stated. Authorities had anticipated potential disruptions regardless of the election outcome and were prepared to respond accordingly.

Around 8:30 p.m., officers dispersed a group of juveniles dressed in black on Market Street, leading to two arrests. Commissioner Bethel appealed to parents to engage with their children, warning that any negative activity would be met with appropriate action.

Several police units were stationed near stores previously targeted by looters. In Hunting Park, a group of juveniles attempted to break into DTLR on Germantown Avenue but were unsuccessful.

Commissioner Bethel attributed some of the incidents to opportunists attempting to cause harm or damage property.

In Center City, precautionary measures were evident. The New Balance store on Walnut Street was boarded up, while crews prepared to shield Pandora. Guards were posted outside Foot Locker on Chestnut Street. Several businesses, including LuLuLemon and JCrew, closed early, as did businesses on Aramingo Avenue in Port Richmond.

Meanwhile, a peaceful protest was held near City Hall by the Socialist Alternative and Revolutionary Communists of America, who aimed to oppose President Trump’s agenda and deportation programs.

“We’re out here to start a mass movement against Trump’s right-wing agenda and stop his mass deportation program,” stated protester Eric Jenkins.

Despite heightened security, Commissioner Bethel expressed hope for a peaceful process. “We’re here ready to go, but we’re hoping this continues to be a peaceful process,” he said.
