Sharjah, UAE – Afghanistan secured a convincing victory over Bangladesh in the first One Day International (ODI) of the three-match series, taking a 1-0 lead. Despite a strong start, Bangladesh crumbled spectacularly in their chase, succumbing to a stunning bowling performance from Afghanistan’s Allah Ghazanfar.
Chasing a modest target of 235 runs, Bangladesh looked comfortable at 120/2. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan were well-set, and a comfortable win seemed on the cards. However, Ghazanfar turned the tide with a mesmerizing display of spin bowling, capturing six wickets for just 26 runs.
Ghazanfar’s onslaught began with the dismissal of Shanto, breaking the 55-run partnership. He then took out Mehidy and sparked a collapse that saw Bangladesh lose their last eight wickets for a paltry 23 runs. The turning point came in the 41st over when Ghazanfar dismissed three batsmen in a row, including Mushfiqur Rahim, Rishad Hossain, and Taskin Ahmed. Rashid Khan then chipped in with the wicket of Towhid Hridoy, bringing the curtains down on a humiliating defeat for Bangladesh.
Earlier, Afghanistan themselves had a shaky start, struggling to 71/5. However, captain Hashamtullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi, who top-scored with a half-century, steadied the innings. Their partnership pushed the score to 235, ultimately proving sufficient to secure a comfortable win.
This defeat extends Bangladesh’s losing streak in international cricket to eight matches across formats. The second ODI is scheduled for Friday, November 8th.
