**Kyiv, Ukraine:** Donald Trump’s victory in the US Presidential elections has cast a shadow of uncertainty over Ukraine, raising anxieties in Kyiv as the country battles a relentless Russian offensive.
The war-torn nation, heavily reliant on foreign military aid, particularly from the US, is bracing for a potential shift in support under a Trump administration. Trump has previously suggested forcing Ukraine into territorial concessions and conditioning US assistance, sparking concerns that vital aid could be curtailed.
“It’s worrying. It’s disturbing,” said Natalia Pichakchi, a resident who fled the besieged city of Mariupol. “Something will change; there will not be the same kind of support as before.”
While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope for a peaceful resolution under Trump’s leadership, he acknowledged the potential for a change in approach.
“I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media. “This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer.”
However, behind closed doors, some Ukrainian officials maintain a cautious optimism, advocating a wait-and-see approach.
“I think his role is a bit exaggerated that he will drastically change something for the worse,” said Tetiana Podleska, an IT worker, adding that while Trump’s presidency might not worsen the situation, it’s unlikely to improve Ukraine’s position in the conflict.
The uncertainty has spurred calls for Ukraine to redouble its efforts to secure its own future. “Because our lives, our country’s future is in our hands,” said Olga Prykhodko, a Kyiv teacher.
Meanwhile, others, like Igor Stryzheus, a Kyiv resident, express deeper concern about the implications of a Trump presidency. “It worries everyone. It worries the whole world – not only Ukraine,” he said.
The future of US support for Ukraine remains uncertain, leaving Kyiv in a state of anxious anticipation as it confronts the daunting challenges of the ongoing war.
