Tue Nov 05 21:45:50 UTC 2024: ## Champions League Match Honors Victims of Valencia Floods
**Lisbon, Portugal** – A poignant minute of silence was observed before the UEFA Champions League match between Sporting CP and Manchester City on Tuesday, in memory of the victims of the devastating floods in Valencia, Spain.
The packed José Alvalade Stadium stood in quiet contemplation as the players and officials paid their respects. Following the silence, the referee blew the whistle, signaling the start of the match, which was met with a wave of applause from the crowd.
Last week’s exceptional storm claimed the lives of at least 218 people, mostly in the Valencia region, and left a trail of destruction in its wake. In recognition of the tragedy, UEFA announced that a minute of silence would be held at all UEFA club competition matches this week.
Valencia’s La Liga match against Real Madrid and their Copa del Rey tie were postponed as a result of the floods.
The match between Sporting CP and Manchester City also carried added significance as it was Ruben Amorim’s last game as Sporting manager before taking over as Manchester United head coach. Sporting currently leads the Liga Potugal with an undefeated record, while Manchester City seeks to rebound after recent losses in the League Cup and Premier League.
