**HOUSTON, TEXAS -** Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has secured a third term in office, defeating Democratic challenger Colin Allred in Tuesday’s election. This victory marks another setback for Texas Democrats who haven’t won a statewide race in 30 years.
Despite a growing Hispanic and Black population, and a surge in new residents from other states, Democrats failed to capitalize on the state’s shifting demographics.
Cruz, a controversial figure known for his national ambitions and conservative stances, ran on a platform of law and order and economic prosperity. He successfully presented himself as a “get-things-done” legislator, distancing himself from his previous firebrand image.
Cruz’s victory, which includes a significant lead over Allred, helped Republicans reclaim control of the U.S. Senate for the first time in four years.
“Tonight the people of Texas have spoken, and their message rings clear as a bell across our great state: Texas will remain Texas,” Cruz said in his victory speech, addressing his supporters in Houston.
The economy and jobs were the top issues for Texas voters, followed by immigration and abortion, according to a national survey.
Cruz, a former Texas Solicitor General and 2016 presidential candidate, is known for his popular podcast “Verdict” which defended former President Donald Trump during his impeachment.
His opponent, Allred, is a former NFL player and civil rights attorney who defeated a Republican incumbent in the 2018 congressional elections.
Cruz’s win, particularly his strong performance in border counties, showcases the enduring strength of the Republican Party in Texas despite the state’s demographic changes.
