Wed Nov 06 03:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Hyderabad’s Ancient Rocks Face Extinction, New Documentary Highlights Fight for Preservation

**Bengaluru, India – November 6, 2024:** As Hyderabad embraces rapid development, the city’s unique and ancient rock formations, some dating back nearly 2.5 billion years, are facing an existential threat. A new documentary, “Other Kohinoors: The Rocks of Hyderabad,” aims to raise awareness and mobilize citizens to protect this vital part of the city’s heritage.

The film, directed by Dublin-based filmmaker Uma Magal, who grew up in Hyderabad, explores the city’s profound connection to its geological past. Through a combination of live-action footage, artistic animations, and a unique rap song, the documentary highlights the cultural, historical, and ecological significance of the rocks.

“Hyderabad has always had these stunning rocks,” says Magal. “They are a marker of home for many Hyderabdis.” However, she witnessed the disappearance of these rocks firsthand during her time in the city, as they were destroyed to make way for new developments.

“Other Kohinoors” is not just a lament for what’s been lost, but a call to action. Magal emphasizes the need for a balance between progress and preservation, urging authorities and citizens alike to take steps to protect the city’s geological heritage.

The film, which was formally released in September 2022, has already been screened in over 200 schools, colleges, cafes, and government organizations across Hyderabad. It has also been showcased at multiple film festivals, earning accolades and sparking conversations about the city’s unique identity.

“We wanted to show how the culture honours this landscape,” explains Magal. “There is so much affection, gratitude and respect for the rocks.”

“Other Kohinoors: The Rocks of Hyderabad” will be screened at the NGMA, Bengaluru on November 13th. The documentary is also available on YouTube.
