Tue Nov 05 20:43:11 UTC 2024: ## France Pushes Back Against EU EV Fines, Raising Concerns Over Automotive Industry Transition

**BRUSSELS** – France is seeking to delay the implementation of European Union fines for carmakers failing to meet electric vehicle (EV) production targets. This move comes amidst concerns about the EU’s ambitious goal of phasing out gasoline and diesel cars by 2035, a target that has put significant pressure on the bloc’s powerful automotive industry.

“The EU’s plan to switch to EVs by 2035 is a massive undertaking,” says Ben Aris, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of bne IntelliNews. “The industry is struggling to keep up with the demand for EVs, and there are serious concerns about the availability of raw materials needed for battery production.”

Ferdinand Dudenhoffer, Director at the Center for Automotive Research, adds, “The transition to EVs requires significant investment in new technologies and production facilities. Many carmakers are simply not equipped to make this transition quickly enough.”

The French government, a strong advocate for its domestic automotive industry, fears that the fines will further exacerbate the situation. “France is worried that the fines will push carmakers to prioritize EV production in other countries, jeopardizing jobs and economic growth in France,” explains Nick Gibbs, Correspondent for Automotive News Europe.

The EU’s plan to phase out combustion engine vehicles is a major policy shift with far-reaching consequences. The debate over the implementation of the fines highlights the challenges facing both the EU and the automotive industry as they navigate this complex transition.
