Wed Nov 06 10:58:02 UTC 2024: ## Trump’s Return Threatens Paris Climate Agreement, Warns Congress Leader

**New Delhi, November 6, 2024:** Congress leader and former Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has expressed concern over the future of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change following Donald Trump’s projected win in the US presidential elections.

Ramesh believes Trump’s return to power jeopardizes the agreement, which the US had rejoined under President Biden. He warns that a US withdrawal from the agreement would be disastrous for global climate efforts.

“The future of the Paris Agreement is now extremely shaky,” Ramesh stated, adding that the implications of Trump’s victory for the US and the world will be analyzed in the coming weeks.

Despite the concerns, Congress party chief Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated Trump on his victory, expressing hope for continued cooperation between India and the US.

The Paris Agreement, signed by nearly 200 countries, aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. The US withdrawal under Trump’s previous presidency had been widely criticized for undermining global efforts to combat climate change.
