**New Delhi, November 6, 2024:** President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday urged the judiciary to shed colonial practices and prioritize equal justice, emphasizing the need for a system rooted in Indian values.

Speaking at the release of three Supreme Court publications, including “Justice for Nation: Reflections on 75 years of the Supreme Court of India,” President Murmu highlighted the importance of the judiciary as a champion of social justice. She lauded the Supreme Court’s development of a jurisprudence that reflects Indian realities and ethos.

“The members of the Constitution Assembly, who experienced the injustices of colonial rule, envisioned a judiciary that would be an instrument of social revolution, upholding equality,” President Murmu stated. She stressed that “equal justice and eliminating outdated colonial practices should guide our judiciary.” While acknowledging the value of pre-independence legal frameworks, she stressed the need to move beyond the legacy of colonialism.

President Murmu also expressed concern about the high number of undertrial prisoners, highlighting the need for judicial reforms to reduce this figure. She commended the newly released report on the prison system, which aims to analyze the judiciary’s role in this issue.

The event was attended by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
