**Bengaluru, November 6, 2024:** Birati Samuho Performers Collective, a Kolkata-based theatre troupe known for its modern reinterpretation of folk narratives, is bringing two unique productions to Bengaluru this week.
The troupe will present “Atho Hidimba Kotha” and “Bhasaili Re…”, both focusing on strong female characters often sidelined in their original tales.
“Atho Hidimba Kotha” delves into the Mahabharata, offering a fresh perspective on Hidimba, the fierce tribal woman who is often relegated to a minor role. The play portrays her as a strong, independent woman, challenging traditional portrayals of her.
“Bhasaili Re…” focuses on Behula, a devoted wife from the Bengali folklore “Manasa Mangal Kavya,” and reimagines her story with a modern feminist lens. Behula’s journey is depicted as a complex one, questioning societal expectations placed on women.
Both productions are intentionally crafted in Bengali, staying close to the cultural rhythms of rural Bengal while remaining accessible to audiences from diverse backgrounds.
Titas Dutta, founder and director of Birati Samuho, emphasizes the troupe’s commitment to challenging traditional narratives and societal norms. The performances are designed to engage audiences through satire, parody, and accessible language, inviting them to reflect on contemporary social struggles.
Birati Samuho’s performances will be held at various locations in Bengaluru from November 7-9th.
