**Jaipur, India:** A concerning number of tigers have disappeared from Ranthambore National Park (RNP) in Rajasthan, prompting an official investigation. 25 out of 75 tigers have gone missing over the past year, with 14 specifically unaccounted for since May 17th, 2024. This marks the highest number of tigers reported missing in a single year at Ranthambore, surpassing the previous record of 13 missing tigers between 2019 and 2022.
The Rajasthan Wildlife Department has formed a three-member committee to investigate the disappearances. The committee will examine monitoring records and recommend action if any lapses by park officials are found. Their report is expected within two months.
The disappearances have been attributed to several factors, including overcrowding within the park, which leads to territorial conflicts. Experts have previously stated that the park’s 900 square kilometers can only safely house around 40 adult tigers. The presence of young tigers and cubs further intensifies the competition for resources.
The park is also facing challenges from encroachment by local communities. While efforts are underway to relocate villages from the buffer zone, progress has been slow with the last relocation occurring in 2016.
The Chief Wildlife Warden, Pavan Kumar Upadhyay, stated that the investigation is being taken very seriously, and that monitoring gaps are being addressed. The department is collecting weekly monitoring reports to track tiger activity and ensure a comprehensive understanding of the situation.
This alarming development raises concerns about the conservation of this endangered species and highlights the need for effective management strategies to ensure the well-being of tigers within Ranthambore National Park.
