**Hyderabad, India** – Telangana is set to become the second Congress-ruled state after Karnataka to conduct a comprehensive caste census, beginning on November 6th. This move comes amidst a push by the Congress party to dismantle the 50% reservation cap in India, a policy aimed at uplifting historically disadvantaged communities.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was in Telangana for a meeting with party leaders and social groups, emphasized the need to accurately map the socio-economic profile of all castes in India. He stated that the census, along with an economic mapping exercise, will shed light on the true extent of poverty and help to determine the percentage of the population that requires support through reservations.
The Telangana government has announced that the census will be carried out by 85,000 enumerators, with 48,000 teachers deployed to assist. The data collected will encompass a wide range of factors, including social, educational, employment, economic, and political details.
This comprehensive census aims to supersede a 1993 law that only gathered limited data on education and employment quota for backward castes. It is believed that the results of the census will inform future policy decisions regarding reservations and provide a clearer picture of social inequalities in India.
