Tue Nov 05 14:50:21 UTC 2024: ## Iran Sentences Three to Death for Spying and Scientist’s Assassination

**Tehran, Iran** – Three individuals have been sentenced to death in Iran for espionage and involvement in the assassination of top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, according to the Iranian judiciary. The suspects, who were among eight arrested in West Azarbaijan province, were found guilty of working for Israel.

The death sentences were handed down after a court in Urmia found the three guilty of “transporting equipment into Iran for the assassination of martyr Fakhrizadeh under the guise of smuggling alcoholic beverages.” The case is currently under appeal.

Fakhrizadeh was killed in November 2020 when his car was ambushed on a highway outside Tehran. Iran has blamed Israel for the assassination, although Israel has not publicly confirmed nor denied involvement. Fakhrizadeh was widely considered a key figure in Iran’s nuclear program, leading efforts to develop nuclear weapons in the early 2000s.

The Iranian judiciary is still reviewing charges against the other four suspects arrested in connection with the assassination.

This sentencing comes amidst heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, fueled by the recent war in Gaza and the ongoing regional rivalry. Both nations have engaged in a series of escalating military confrontations, including missile attacks and air strikes.

The execution of the three individuals will likely further escalate tensions between Iran and Israel.
