**Gaza City, Palestine** – The United States has expressed disappointment with Israel’s efforts to improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating that Israel has not implemented enough of their recommendations to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. Despite issuing a warning in October that Israel would face consequences if it failed to act, the US has not outlined what these consequences would be.
The statement comes as Israeli airstrikes continue to target Gaza, including a recent attack on the last partially functioning hospital in the northern part of the enclave. The attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital injured medical staff and patients, including children, and damaged the upper floors. This follows an earlier Israeli raid on the hospital that detained dozens of medical staff, leaving it with limited capacity to provide care.
The US State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, acknowledged that Israel has failed to implement all of the US recommendations but did not specify what those recommendations were or what consequences Israel could face. He stated that Israel “certainly do not have a pass.”
Despite the US criticism, Israel maintains its position that its military actions are necessary to prevent Hamas fighters from regrouping. However, the siege of several areas in northern Gaza, coupled with the drastic reduction of humanitarian aid, has further exacerbated the suffering of civilians.
The UN has also expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis, with UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini stating that only 6% of the pre-war supplies are currently allowed into Gaza. Israel’s decision to end its agreement with UNRWA, accusing some staff of being Hamas members, has further jeopardized aid efforts.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 43,391 Palestinians and injuries to over 102,347 since the start of the war in October. In addition to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Israel has also suffered significant casualties, with at least 1,139 Israelis killed and over 200 taken captive.
The US remains Israel’s primary arms supplier, further complicating its role in the conflict. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to “substantially increase and sustain humanitarian aid” to Gaza. However, the US has not yet clarified what actions it will take to pressure Israel into complying with its demands.
