**Washington, D.C.** – Meta announced on Monday that it is making its open-source AI models available to US defense and national security agencies, marking a significant shift in the tech giant’s relationship with the military. This move, fueled by the escalating global competition in AI development, aims to bolster US leadership in the field.
Meta has partnered with leading defense contractors like Lockheed Martin, Palantir, and Anduril, alongside tech giants like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and IBM, to implement its Llama language models in various national security operations. These partnerships will enable agencies to leverage advanced AI capabilities for tasks ranging from aircraft maintenance to operational planning.
Several implementations are already underway, including Oracle’s development of systems to synthesize aircraft maintenance documents, Scale AI’s customization of the technology for national security missions, and Lockheed Martin’s integration of Llama into its AI Factory.
“Other nations – including China and other competitors of the United States – understand this as well, and are racing to develop their own open source models, investing heavily to leap ahead of the U.S.,” Meta stated in a press release.
To address concerns about military AI applications, Meta emphasized its commitment to ethical deployment, aligning all implementations with international law and the Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy.
Beyond military applications, the partnerships extend to broader government services. Deloitte is implementing Llama-based solutions for federal agencies and nonprofits, focusing on education, energy, and small business development. The State Department is also involved in promoting safe AI systems for addressing societal challenges globally.
Meta’s decision follows a broader trend of increasing cooperation between the tech sector and national security establishments. The company’s move highlights the growing importance of artificial intelligence in national security strategy and military modernization efforts.
