**New Delhi, November 5, 2024:** After a delay of over six months, the much-anticipated Delhi mayoral polls are finally scheduled for November 14th. The delay, which sparked heated exchanges between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stemmed from a stalemate over the appointment of a Presiding Officer.
The polls were initially postponed in April after Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena refused to appoint a Presiding Officer, citing the lack of input from former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Subsequent attempts to reschedule the polls in October were also met with delays to avoid clashing with the festival season.
The mayoral polls, held annually, rotate among councilors from different social groups. This year, the Mayor’s position is reserved for a councilor from the Scheduled Caste community.
