Tue Nov 05 01:48:15 UTC 2024: ## Spain Battles Back-to-Back Floods: Barcelona Hit After Deadly Valencia Disaster

**Barcelona, Spain** – Heavy flooding has hit the Spanish city of Barcelona just days after devastating floods in the Valencia region claimed the lives of at least 217 people. The Spanish state meteorological agency has placed parts of Catalonia, where Barcelona is located, on red alert for torrential rain.

Footage shows cars submerged on highways and parts of Barcelona’s El Prat airport, the country’s second largest, flooded. Over 80 flights have been cancelled or delayed, and rail services have been suspended.

The Valencia floods, which brought a year’s worth of rain in just a few days last week, trapped many victims in their vehicles and underground spaces like car parks and tunnels. Rescue efforts continue, with focus on searching for missing people.

Among the dead is a British couple in their 70s, whose family confirmed they were found in their car days after the floods hit.

While there have been no reported deaths in Catalonia, anger and frustration have erupted in Valencia. Protesters, angry at the perceived lack of warning and support from authorities, pelted King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez with mud and objects during their visits to the affected area.

The Civil Guard has opened an investigation into the chaotic scenes, blaming marginal groups for instigating the violence.

The Spanish government has mobilized over 7,800 troops and 17,000 volunteers to aid in the relief efforts. A warship carrying supplies and personnel has also docked in Valencia’s port.

Scientists say climate change exacerbated the floods in Valencia, highlighting the growing threat posed by extreme weather events.
