Tue Nov 05 01:26:23 UTC 2024: ## Spain Battered by More Torrential Rain as Flood Recovery Continues
**Barcelona, Spain** – Just days after devastating floods claimed the lives of at least 217 people across eastern Spain, the region is facing more torrential rain. A red alert for extreme danger has been issued for Barcelona, with mobile phone warnings urging residents to avoid canals and gorges due to the heavy rainfall.
To combat the threat, Spain’s transport minister, Oscar Puente, suspended all commuter trains in northeast Catalonia, urging the region’s eight million residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Social media footage shows the rain overwhelming stairwells and turning streets into rivers.
At Barcelona’s El Prat airport, around 50 flights were cancelled or delayed due to flooding, while 17 inbound flights were diverted. Several major roads have also been closed.
As the nation mourns the loss of life and grapples with the aftermath of the floods, search and rescue efforts continue, with thousands of soldiers assisting in the search for missing people. The operation is ongoing, six days after the initial disaster.
While communities continue to reel from the catastrophe, attention has focused on an underground car park in Aldaia, where emergency services have been working to drain floodwater. Initial fears that dozens of bodies might be found inside the car park were eased by firefighters who confirmed that, so far, no bodies have been recovered.
However, anger towards the authorities is growing, with survivors expressing frustration over the response to the crisis. During a visit to one of the hardest-hit towns, King Felipe was met with mud and insults from residents. Many were trapped in underground garages, which became death traps, by the time authorities sent alerts to their phones urging them to stay indoors.
The Valencia MotoGP race, scheduled for later this month, has been cancelled due to damage caused by the floods. Thousands of volunteers are assisting in the clean-up operation, clearing mud from streets and homes.
