**Washington D.C. -** The International Trade Commission (ITC) has voted against imposing import duties on aluminum extrusions from 14 countries, including China, India, and Mexico. This decision comes despite the US Department of Commerce’s findings last month that these countries were engaging in unfair trade practices by dumping and subsidizing their aluminum extrusions in the US market.
The US Aluminum Extruders Coalition (USAEC) and the United Steelworkers (USW) union expressed disappointment with the ITC’s decision, stating that the domestic industry continues to be harmed by unfairly traded imports.
Meanwhile, Alcoa and Century Aluminum welcomed the US Treasury Department’s final regulations on the Section 45X Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit, which aims to support domestic manufacturing of critical materials, including aluminum.
In other aluminum news, the US ITC has determined that imports of aluminum lithographic printing plates from China and Japan are causing material injury to the US industry. As a result, the US Department of Commerce will soon impose countervailing duties on imports from China and antidumping duties on imports from both China and Japan.
On a positive note, researchers at the University of Michigan have developed a new aluminum alloy that could revolutionize automotive manufacturing for electric vehicles. This new material, a metal matrix nanocomposite, is stronger and more heat-resistant than previous alloys, making it a viable alternative to heavier steel.
These developments highlight the ongoing complexities of the aluminum industry, with both challenges and opportunities emerging for US manufacturers.
