Mon Nov 04 20:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Broncos Lock Down Emerging Edge Rusher Jonathon Cooper With 4-Year, $60 Million Extension

Denver, CO – In a move showcasing their commitment to defensive development, the Denver Broncos have signed edge rusher Jonathon Cooper to a four-year contract extension worth $60 million. The deal, which includes $33 million in guaranteed money, will keep Cooper in Denver through the 2028 season.

The news comes shortly after the Broncos traded fellow edge rusher Baron Browning to the Arizona Cardinals. This commitment to Cooper, a former seventh-round pick, signifies Denver’s belief in his continued growth. Cooper has blossomed into a starter for the Broncos since joining the team in 2021, emerging from the shadow of his Ohio State teammate Browning.

“This is a well-deserved deal for Jonathon,” said Broncos General Manager George Paton. “He’s worked extremely hard to earn his place in this league and has been a valuable asset to our defense. We’re excited to have him locked in for the long term.”

The $15 million per year average annual value (AAV) of Cooper’s contract places him tied for 19th among edge rushers. While this represents a substantial increase in pay for the late-round selection, it remains a cost-effective move for the Broncos, who have been criticized for past high-priced deals on edge rushers. This extension also adds another key piece to Denver’s defensive core, alongside fellow rising star Nik Bonitto.

Cooper’s production has been impressive, with 8.5 sacks last season and 5.5 already this year. He’s also been a consistent presence in the backfield, racking up 13 QB hits in 17 games in 2022 and 11 through nine games this season.

The Broncos are currently 5-4 and boast the second-most sacks in the league this season. With Cooper secured for the future, Denver’s defense looks poised to continue its dominant play for years to come.
