Tue Nov 05 08:23:02 UTC 2024: ## Indian Government Questions Wikipedia’s Status as “Neutral Platform”

**New Delhi, November 5, 2024:** The Indian government has issued a notice to Wikipedia, questioning its status as a neutral online encyclopedia and demanding clarification on its role as a publisher.

The notice, issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, states that numerous complaints have been received regarding the accuracy and bias of information published on Wikipedia. Concerns have been raised about the potential influence of a small group of individuals in controlling the content and editing process on the platform.

The government has specifically pointed out that Wikipedia should be considered a publisher rather than just an intermediary, as it holds significant influence over the information accessible to the public.

This move follows a recent controversy surrounding the Wikipedia page for the ANI news agency, where it was labeled as a “propaganda tool for those in power” and accused of disseminating fake news. ANI filed a defamation suit against Wikipedia, and the Delhi High Court, in its ruling, expressed strong disapproval of Wikipedia’s refusal to disclose information about the editors responsible for the controversial changes on the ANI page.

The court also warned Wikipedia that it may be barred from operating in India if it fails to comply with the court order and further urged the government to consider taking action against the platform.

This development comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk last month publicly criticized Wikipedia, claiming it was controlled by “far-left activists” and urged people to stop donating to the platform.

While Wikipedia presents itself as a free and open platform for information sharing, with contributions from volunteers, the recent events have raised serious questions about its neutrality and accountability in upholding journalistic standards. The government’s notice and the legal challenges faced by Wikipedia mark a significant escalation in the scrutiny of online platforms and their role in shaping public discourse.
