**Jharkhand, India** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led INDIA bloc, accusing them of remaining silent over sexist comments made by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant against BJP leader Shaina NC.
During an election rally in Jharkhand, Modi claimed that the opposition had used foul language against a woman leader. He further stated that the INDIA bloc, which is allied with the Thackeray Sena in Maharashtra and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in Jharkhand, would be taught a lesson by the people for their disrespect towards women.
Modi also criticized the Congress for allegedly humiliating Sita Soren, the BJP candidate and sister-in-law of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
The controversy arose last week when Sawant, a Lok Sabha MP, made derogatory remarks about Shaina NC, who joined the Shinde Sena faction to contest the upcoming Maharashtra elections. Responding to a question about Shaina’s chances in the election, Sawant made a sexist comment, referring to her as “maal” (goods).
Shaina NC strongly condemned the remarks, calling them crass and highlighting that she was a woman, not an object. She further accused the opposition alliance of having no respect for women.
Sawant later tried to defend his comments, claiming that he had a good relationship with Shaina and that she might have misinterpreted his remarks. However, his explanation was dismissed, and a police case was filed against him.
This incident has reignited the debate on sexism and disrespect towards women in Indian politics, with Modi using it as a tool to attack the opposition ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
