Mon Nov 04 15:49:31 UTC 2024: ## Environmentalists Launch 10-Day March for Clean Tungabhadra River in Karnataka
**Shivamogga, Karnataka (November 4, 2024):** A 10-day march to raise awareness about the importance of a clean Tungabhadra River will commence on November 6th, starting in Sringeri and ending in Harihar. Organized by the Paryavaran Trust, the “Nirmala Tungabhadra Abhiyana” will involve over 60 participants, including students, farmers, elected officials, and religious leaders.
The march, which aims to highlight the urgent need for clean water sources, will focus on the lack of sewage treatment plants (STPs) in urban areas and mini-STPs in rural villages. Prof. B.M. Kumaraswamy, president of the Paryavaran Trust, emphasized the importance of the river, stating that it provides water to thousands of people and farmers in Karnataka.
“The Tunga Abhiyana, held last year, led to some positive action from the Karnataka government in terms of river cleaning. Now, we are launching the Clean Tungabhadra campaign. Following the march, a report outlining the issues and recommendations will be submitted to the government and made public,” said Prof. Kumaraswamy.
The march has garnered support from various sectors, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Shivamogga. Dr. S. Sridhara, IMA president, highlighted the health risks associated with contaminated drinking water and emphasized the importance of the campaign.
The march will conclude in Harihar on November 15th, with a second phase planned from Harihar to Kishkinda in Koppal district at a later date. The initiative underscores the growing concern about water pollution in Karnataka and the need for collaborative efforts to protect vital water sources.
