Manchester United drew 1-1 with Chelsea in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first game as interim manager, with the Red Devils’ attacking woes again proving costly. Alejandro Garnacho missed several clear-cut chances, including a glaring sitter, while Marcus Rashford hit the bar in the first half.
Despite the profligacy in attack, United broke the deadlock in the 70th minute when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty awarded after Rasmus Hojlund was fouled. However, the joy was short-lived as Moises Caicedo equalised for Chelsea just four minutes later with a stunning volley.
While the attack struggled, the Red Devils’ defence impressed. Matthjis de Ligt was instrumental in containing Cole Palmer, while Noussair Mazraoui produced a solid performance.
This was a far cry from van Nistelrooy’s goal-fest in his first game against Leicester, but it showcased his tactical prowess in organising a solid backline. Garnacho’s profligacy, however, serves as a reminder of United’s need for a clinical striker.
