Mon Nov 04 15:45:32 UTC 2024: ## Train Derailment in UP: Station Master and Keyman Blamed for Lack of Training

**Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, November 4, 2024:** A recent investigation into the derailment of the Chandigarh-Diburgarh Express in July 2024 has revealed a shocking lapse in safety protocols. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) found that the Station Master and keyman at Motiganj failed to take timely action despite identifying a serious track defect.

The derailment, which occurred between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations, resulted in four fatalities and 20 injuries. While initial suspicions pointed towards sabotage, the CRS’s investigation concluded that the lack of training, experience, and confidence amongst the station personnel led to the tragedy.

“Training for all departments at all levels should be reviewed,” the CRS report stated, highlighting the need for enhanced training for loco crews and inspectors to identify track defects.

The Railway Board, acting on the CRS’s recommendations, has instructed all Zonal Railways to dedicate sectional officers and officials solely to maintaining safety assets like tracks, rolling stock, signalling, and electrification. These personnel must undergo rigorous training to detect safety-related failures and understand root cause analysis.

The incident underscores the critical need for comprehensive training and expertise in railway safety protocols to prevent future accidents.
