Mon Nov 04 02:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Chhath Puja 2024: A Celebration of the Sun God and Prosperity in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

Chhath Puja, a four-day festival celebrated with great fervor in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, is dedicated to the worship of the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, the sister of the Sun God. The festival holds deep significance for the people of the region, who believe that worshipping the Sun God brings health, prosperity, and peace.

According to mythology, the Sun God is considered the source of life and energy, illuminating the world and dispelling darkness. Offerings are made to him as a way to seek fulfillment of wishes and aspirations.

Chhathi Maiya, also known as Gauri, Usha, or Chhathi Devi, is revered for her blessings of fertility and family well-being. Devotees pray to her for a happy family life and the well-being of their children.

The festival begins with ‘Nहाय-खाय’, where devotees bathe and prepare special dishes like rice, chickpeas, and pumpkin. On the second day, known as ‘Kharna’, a fast is observed, followed by the preparation of ‘kheer’ (sweet rice pudding) for a special offering. The third day witnesses devotees offering prayers to the setting sun at the banks of rivers, lakes, or other water bodies, while the fourth day marks the offering to the rising sun.

Chhath Puja, with its focus on fasting, rituals, and offerings, is not just a religious observance but also a vital part of the cultural heritage of Bihar. It brings people together, fostering a sense of community and strengthening traditional bonds.
