**Dhaka, November 3, 2024** – The newly formed Bangladesh Constitutional Reform Commission, appointed following the recent student-led revolution that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has vowed to dismantle fascism and safeguard democracy.
The commission, led by political science professor Ali Riaz, will be submitting its recommendations to the interim government by December 31st. This is part of the sweeping changes promised by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, who now serves as the country’s chief advisor.
Professor Riaz stated that the commission aims to draft a constitution reflecting the aspirations of Bangladeshi citizens. He highlighted the excessive power vested in the Prime Minister under the current constitution, leading to a centralized authority that promotes fascism. The commission believes that achieving a balance of power is crucial to prevent future authoritarianism.
The reform process will involve extensive consultations with constitutional experts, lawyers, civil society representatives, and political parties. The interim government will then present the recommendations to the commission, paving the way for a final version through further discussions.
The commission’s creation comes in the wake of widespread human rights abuses under Ms. Hasina’s 15-year rule, including mass detentions, extrajudicial killings, and the manipulation of courts and civil service.
