**Agra, Uttar Pradesh:** An Indian Air Force MiG-29 fighter jet crashed near Agra today after encountering a system malfunction during a routine training sortie. The pilot, who was able to eject safely, is reported to be unharmed.
The aircraft, which was an upgraded MiG-29 UPG, burst into flames in an open field in Songa village. Images from the scene show the aircraft engulfed in fire, with people standing nearby and holding equipment resembling an ejection seat.
The Indian Air Force has confirmed the incident and announced an investigation into the cause of the crash. In a statement, the IAF emphasized that the pilot skillfully maneuvered the aircraft to prevent damage to life and property on the ground before ejecting.
This is the second MiG-29 crash in two months. In September, a MiG-29 crashed in Rajasthan’s Barmer after experiencing a technical snag during a night sortie, with the pilot ejecting safely.
The MiG-29, known as ‘Fulcrum’ in NATO and ‘Baaz’ in India, is a highly regarded air superiority fighter jet originally developed in Soviet Russia. It was inducted into the Indian Air Force in 1987 and has a generally safe track record.
The aircraft is equipped with the Zvezda K-36D zero-zero ejection seat, considered one of the most advanced in the world. This system allows pilots to safely eject from the aircraft even at zero altitude and speed, providing crucial protection in critical situations.
