Sun Nov 03 11:08:26 UTC 2024: ## South Africa’s Surge Threatens World Test Championship Race

**Mumbai, India:** The race for the World Test Championship (WTC) final is heating up with a surprise contender, South Africa, threatening to shake up the leaderboard.

Despite India needing at least four wins out of their remaining six Test matches, including the upcoming Mumbai Test, to maintain their top spot, the Proteas have climbed to fourth place with a dominant innings and 273-run victory over Bangladesh in the second Test. This win marks their biggest in Test history and boosts their points percentage to 54.17%, surpassing New Zealand.

While India and Australia remain perched at the top with 62.82% and 62.50% respectively, the Border Gavaskar series will be crucial for both teams. India needs four wins from their next six to secure their spot, while Australia requires five wins from seven.

New Zealand, however, still has a chance. They need to win in Mumbai and whitewash England 3-0 at home to secure a place in the WTC final. This strategy echoes their 2020/21 victory, where they managed to secure their place in the final after winning four consecutive Tests.

However, South Africa’s recent surge cannot be overlooked. With a 2-0 whitewash against Bangladesh, they now have a chance to make a late push for the final. They will face Sri Lanka in a two-match series later this month followed by two Tests against Pakistan at home starting Boxing Day. Winning all four matches could push their points percentage close to 70%, while even three wins and a loss would see them surpass 60% and challenge India and Australia.

Sri Lanka, currently in third place with 55.56%, will need to upset South Africa on the road to maintain their position. Meanwhile, England, despite leading the WTC cycle with nine wins from 19 matches, faces deductions due to slow over rates, leaving them in sixth place.

The World Test Championship race is far from over with several teams still in contention. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining who ultimately earns a place in the final.
